On clothes (and looks)

They say the clothes make the man. That's probably half true. You don't have to wear expensive clothes but you'll really want to dress to impress.

Clothes do make a difference, not just how you look, but also how you feel. Have you ever made this experiment: grow a week-old beard then put on a regular t-shirt, plain jeans and sneakers then look in the mirror? Chances are you don't like what you see. Especially if you have to deal with depression at the same time. But let's continue and shave the beard then put on the same t-shirt, jeans and sneakers. Look in the mirror again. Much better, huh? Great, now let's get to the next level: shirt and blazer. With a shirt and blazer you can still have a day-old or two days old beard and still look good. Throw in a pair of matching shoes and look in the mirror again. Looking good? Great, now shave that beard and look in the mirror. There's the new you. Looking great? Feeling great? Thought so. I have been through it, and as a man dealing with almost lifelong depression, I can say that dressing smart is making things better, at least for morale. It's easy to look like a hobo when you just pick up whatever comes into your hand when opening the closet. You may say you don't care but once you see yourself in the mirror you acknowledge (deep inside at least) that you look awful. I have not been writing since a long time and it feels quite awkward to do it again. The same goes with dressing more attractively, but once you start doing it again, it certainly feels better and at least for me it eases depression.
